Cleaning and washing the windows is a simple but tedious chore that still requires your undivided attention. So before you even attempt to wipe down your dust-covered window pane, it’s important to know how to do it to avoid having to redo your work.

In this cleaning guide, we’ll show you the best ways and tips when cleaning a window — making you a seasoned professional in dealing with your dirty bedroom or office windows.

Cleaning the Windows from the Inside

  1. To clean windows, fill an empty bucket or a large pot with clean and cool water. Add a few drops of your dishwashing liquid soap into the mix and stir it thoroughly.
  2. Put a large and clean bath towel beneath the window panes. This will help catch any spills during the cleaning process.
  3. Use a clean microfiber cloth or a dry sponge to work at every corner and surface of the window. Always start at the top and make your way towards the bottom. Once done, make sure to wipe down the actual window frames as well — both inside and out.
  4. Afterwards, spray the window with a white vinegar and water solution. If you don’t have the time to create this DIY cleaner, you can always use commercial cleaners for windows from your nearest grocery store. Another cleaning alternative is water laced with a few drops of an ammonia solution.
  5. Once the glass has been sprayed, use a clean and lint-free towel to the windows completely. Work your way around the windows in a Z-motion to make sure there are no smudges or uneven surfaces. You can also use newspapers and paper towels as an alternative.
  6. If dirt or streaks still persist, simply spray some more of your cleaning solution and wipe and dry again until you get cleaner windows.

Cleaning the Windows from the Outside

  1. Cleaning the windows from the outside normally requires more effort as these surfaces usually have more dirt and stains. This is why it’s important to always start by rinsing the glass with a water hose.
  2. Before you wash windows, fill a bucket with clean and cool water first and add a couple of drops of your kitchen dishwashing soap.
  3. Get a microfiber cloth and work through the surface of the windows. For high and unreachable surfaces, you can use an extendable sponge mop or a cloth mop.
  4. Rinse everything thoroughly with the water hose.
  5. Once done, spray and mop the surface using a DIY solution of vinegar and water. You can also use a commercial windows cleaner product as an alternative.
  6. Wipe the window dry with a rubber-bladed squeegee. Be sure to angle it towards the bottom of the window and work your way from top to bottom. Afterwards, wipe the squeegee with a clean and dry towel.
  7. For hard-to-remove stains, you can use a vinegar and water solution to break down the dirt away. Let the solution stay on the surface for several minutes before drying. Once done, wipe it away with a soft sponge or any gentle scrubbing cloth. You can also use paper towels as an alternative.
  8. For your final cleaning step, make sure to also tidy up the window screens by rinsing them with clean water and spraying them with the cleaning solution.
  9. Rinse them again with clean water and leave them for several minutes.
  10. Dry the window thoroughly before replacing the screens on the windows.

The Best Ways to Clean a Window

  1. Do it on a dry and cloudy day - Picking a dry and cloudy day is always an essential step in learning how to clean windows. This will help you a lot in setting your cleaning solution on every surface, letting them dry at their own pace without the sun’s harsh rays.
